Ultra Useful : LightBox and VideoBox

Lokesh Dhakar back in May released this updated version of an ultra-useful and ultra-cool script LightBox 2. Lightbox is a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. It's a snap to setup and works on all modern browsers. Lightbox 2 uses the Prototype Framework and Scriptaculous Effects Library.

This can be understood as something like LAYERS that you might have heard of or seen if you have ever been involved in anything that used Photoshop or Flash. This saves you from distraction as the image loads because no new tab or window opens separately for the image to load. The image loads as a new layer over the same page. Lightbox 2 is hence very useful if you want to use thumbnails of pictures on your web page.

LightBox just like for an image can be used for a set of images also. So you can use it with your photo album or picture gallery also. With automatic centering and smooth transitions, LightBox is an eye-candy.

Inspired by this concept, is another 6kb script called the VideoBox or The LightBox for Videos which is capable of showing your videos in the page with an overlay. It's written for the mootools library and uses SWFObject [SWFObject is a small Javascript file used for embedding Adobe Flash content. The script can detect the Flash plug-in in all major web browsers (on Mac and PC) and is designed to make embedding Flash movies as easy as possible.] If you prefer to show the video in thumbnails format, VideoBox is the best solution.

The developer is Faruk Can 'farkob' Bilir, a high school student in Turkey.
